Winston-Salem, North Carolina is at the heart of the South Atlantic region of the United States, between Atlanta, Georgia, and Washington, D.C. For this rising metropolis in the middle of the south, the city has nearly something for everyone from a bustling business economy, nationally ranked school, a vibrant tourism base built on a rich history and activities for all types of people including lovers of the beach, a four-hour drive, or the mountains, a two-hour drive.

Winston-Salem is actually made up of what were once two small towns that now bear its name.

Salem was one of the earliest planned communities of the American colonies, founded in 1766.The home to sawmills, breweries and tanneries, Salem became a trading center and congregation town.

Winston, just north of Salem, was founded in 1849 after residents established it as a major producer of textiles, furniture and tobacco. In 1899, the United States Postal Service merged the Winston and Salem offices, over a few objections from residents of Salem, and the postmark Winston-Salem was born. In 1913, the two cities officially merged and the “Twin City” of North Carolina was realized.

The economic engine for the city began 38 years earlier when a man by the name of Richard Joshua Reynolds moved to the area and started the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company. As tobacco rose, so did the city, but as it declined, Winston-Salem did not and the industry was replaced by banking, technology, medicine, medical research and biotechnology.

Today it is the 11th largest financial center in the country and has a strong presence of international corporations including Pepsi-Cola Customer Service Center, Sara Lee Corporation, Tyco International and the home to Krispy Kreme's corporate headquarters.

For the creative soul, Winston-Salem has long been known as North Carolina's city of the arts; the area is always ranked among the top per capita in contributions to the arts.

Known nationally as a town with friendly residents, a strong business environment, rich culture and countless entertainment options, Winston-Salem is consistently ranked among the top 10 places in the country to live.

Additionally, the city is within 600 miles of half the entire population of the United States. Winston-Salem’s convenient access, experienced workforce, competitive tax rate and enviable weather combine to create an attractive location for companies and their employees.
